Bicycle Mechanic Lead (at Arroyo Park)

The Original Scraper Bike Team, Inc. is seeking a flexible, knowledgeable, service-oriented Bicycle Mechanic Lead to staff our bicycle shed at Arroyo Park. The ideal candidate will have intermediate to expert bicycle mechanic knowledge (of both repairs and bike customizations), as well as be an engaging leader and supportive instructor while providing the Scraper Bike curriculum during scheduled learning sessions.
Note: This position was created for and fully funded by a renewable grant made to our nonprofit. Relying on grant funds means this position could have gaps between grant funding or have an end date if grant funding ceases. All efforts will be made to avoid these situations, but they are a possibility for this role.
Job Requirements:
- Provides and maintains a safe, clean, organized, and comfortable environment
- Enforces all helmet laws and Scraper Bike Team code of conduct rules
- Uses non-evaluative language to ask open-ended questions and provides open ended choices
- Helps participants form appropriate responses and allows participants to suggest solutions
- Provides opportunities for structured small group activities and empowers students to lead
- Interacts positively with all students, coordinators, community members, and Scraper staff
- Follows and completes the Scraper Bike Team curriculum with participants during each session
- Creates opportunities to provide feedback and provides strategies for student reflection
- Provide constant visual and interactive supervision of all participants during curriculum lessons
- Examines bicycle and identifies parts that may need to be repaired, replaced, or modified
- Installs, repairs, and replaces various bicycle equipment including but not limited to handlebars, stands, lights, seats, and speed and gear mechanisms
- Disassembles axles when required to repair, modify, or replace faulty parts
- Aligns wheels of bicycles, inspects tire tubes and uses scrapers and patches to repair them
- Repairs broken or cracked frames
- Builds or assembles new bicycles
- Attends and participates in all required staff training and meetings
- Submits requests for tools and other inventory
- Performs other related duties as assigned by Scraper Bikes
Pay Rate & Benefits: $35 per hour; accrued sick time. No other benefits provided.
Required Hours: Thursdays: 2pm-6pm, Fridays: 2pm-6pm, Saturdays: 11am-5pm, Sundays: 11am-5pm
Work Location: Arroyo Viejo Park, by the Recreation Center
Required Experience:
- Two years’ experience working with children (within school-based services is preferable)
- Two years’ experience working with bicycles
- Intermediate to expert level bicycle mechanic knowledge
- Basic computer literacy including familiarity with Microsoft Office software
